What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is the largest non-profit educational organization in the world, devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality.

Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking – vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind.

What's in it for me?

Toastmasters offers a proven way to improve your communication skills. By participating in a fun and supportive Toastmasters group, you’ll become a better speaker and leader and gain confidence to succeed in whatever path you’ve chosen in life.

If you're afraid of speaking in front of large groups, Toastmasters can help you overcome that fear.

If you're not afraid of speaking in public, but want to improve your skills and become even more effective, Toastmasters can help.

In other words, everyone can benefit from Toastmasters!

I'm not a speaker or trainer.  Why do I need Toastmasters?

Even if your day-to-day job responsibilities don’t involve speaking in front of large groups of people, you still need the skills you can learn in Toastmasters! You’ll learn...

...how to lead teams and conduct meetings.

...how to provide feedback in a constructive manner.

...how to be a better listener.

...how to communicate more effectively.

These are all skills that further your professional development.

How does it work?

Toastmasters clubs are made up of 20 to 30 people who meet on a weekly basis.

Each week, two or three members deliver prepared speeches.

A round of Table Topics gives us a chance to speak off the cuff.

And members take turns providing constructive evaluations of the prepared speeches.

In Toastmasters, we learn by doing.

What are all these acronyms about?

Toastmasters has a structured educational program that allows members to achieve recognition through awards in both communication and leadership.  We use acronyms after a members' name to celebrate how far they've progressed in the educational program.

John Doe, CC has completed his Competent Communicator award.  This is the first milestone in the communication track, earned after completing the ten speech assignments in the Competent Communication manual.

Susan Smith, DTM has achieved her Distinguished Toastmaster award.  This is the highest educational honor presented to a Toastmaster.  It signifies achievement in both the communication and leadership tracks.  A DTM has completed 40 manual speeches, five presentations of longer length, six months of service at the club level, a year of service at the District level, and a High-Performance Leadership project - just to name a few.

There are many steps in-between CC and DTM.  Click here for more detailed information on the educational program and what all those the award acronyms mean.

Tell me about your club...

We’re fortunate to have a Toastmasters club that meets on the Lennox International campus in Richardson.  For LII employees, and those working in the nearby business park, it doesn’t get any more convenient than that! Just bring your lunch to the meeting, and spend an hour with friends.

Lennox International Toastmasters meets every Wednesday in the LII Learning Center. We usually gather in Training Room B. Our meetings begin at 12:05pm sharp, and end at 1:00pm. We’re a fun-loving group, with members from many different departments, and even other companies nearby. It’s a great way to network and meet new people!

What makes your club different from others?

Each Toastmasters club has its own unique culture.  Some are more traditional ... others, very loose and free-wheeling.

Lennox International Toastmasters strikes a delightful balance: we are a professional, corporate club, but our meetings are lighthearted, high-energy, and fun-filled.

Our meeting location makes us unique.  The LII Learning Center is a state-of-the-art facility.  Each room has a built-in ceiling-mount LCD projector with a drop-down screen, hookups for a laptop computer, and access to equipment like overhead projectors and document cameras.  And our club can make use of all of it!

Our member mix is unique as well.  We have both experienced and brand-new members.  We currently have three Distinguished Toastmasters on our roster, one World Champion of Public Speaking, and one Past District Governor.  We also have ten members who are new to Toastmasters, and are at various stages of progress toward their Competent Communicator award.

To put it simply, we're serious about helping our members to develop as communicators and leaders, and we're serious about having a great time while we're doing it!

Do I have to be a Lennox International employee to join?

Short answer: No.  You do not have to be an LII employee to join our club.

More detailed answer: Lennox International Toastmasters is neither sponsored by nor affiliated with Lennox International, Inc.  We are, however, granted permission by LII to meet on-campus and make use of the facilities and services available in the LII Learning Center.

As such, there are no requirements that you be a LII employee to join our club.  In fact, one third of our current membership comes from outside LII!  If our club meeting time and location is convenient for you, if you've got a positive attitude, and a strong desire to learn and grow - while helping others do the same - we welcome your application for membership!

How much does it cost?

The cost for membership in Toastmasters is very small, compared to other methods of developing communication & leadership skills.

New member fee - $20.  This covers all your educational materials as a new member, including your Competent Communication and Competent Leadership manuals.

International Dues ($4.50/month) - $27. This includes your monthly subscription to the “Toastmaster” magazine.

Club-level Dues ($3/month) - $18.  We use these funds to cover expenses for club supplies and the like.  Our club buys name badges for members when they complete their CC award, and we also pay for their advanced manuals.

To join Lennox International Toastmasters, the first six months is $65, and your renewal is just $45 every six months thereafter.

Best of all, most management teams will pay for your membership as employee development! Be sure to ask your supervisor if they’re willing to pick up this expense.

Are your meetings open to guests?

Absolutely! We love guests, and we promise we won’t pressure you to participate in our meeting any more than you want to. Sit in and observe as often as you like.

We do ask that you let us know if you'll be joining us, especially if you are not an LII employee.  We meet in a secured part of the LII campus, and one of our members will need to badge you through to the Training Center.  If we know you're coming, we'll be sure to watch for your arrival!

Who can I contact for more information?
